Munich is world-famous for its beer culture. A look behind the scenes of Munich's large brewery shows on the one hand how much brewing is linked to the city's history and on the other hand that Munich beer is now exported on a large scale all over the world.
The tour of the Spaten brewery on Marsstrasse begins at the huge copper brew kettles. Here the brewing process from the brewhouse to bottling is explained. The tour continues with a journey through the history, which dates back to 1397. A gallery of ancestors shows the members of the Sedlmayr dynasty, which was instrumental in steering the fortunes of the brewery from the beginning of the 20th century. In 1922, Spaten merged with the Franziskaner brewery. For the 600th company anniversary in 1997, Spaten merged with Löwenbräu.
In the brewery's own small museum in the vaulted cellar, historical barrels and bottles, beer mugs, equipment, photographs and share certificates tell an impressive story of the company's history. Also on display is a set of ceremonial dishes used by the brewery's steeds for the Oktoberfest procession. At the end of the actual tour, the bottling plant is presented. Finally, the tour continues up into the brewery tower for beer tasting. From here you have a wonderful view over the city to the Bavarian Radio building and on to the towers of the Frauenkirche in the heart of the old town.
